A boutique that serves as a testament to the founder’s dedication to craft.
For Na Nin’s second location, we were asked to create a space that was beautiful, versatile, and exuded the brand’s well-established aesthetic. Natural materials and neutral colors lead the design, and all major components of the design were made by small businesses in Richmond.
To create a back room and fitting rooms, we used a ceiling-suspended curtain track system and about 140 linear feet of hand-sewn curtains, made using one of the fabrics that Na Nin uses for their linen clothing. The wall of curtains separates the front and back of house, but can be split to open up the back room, allowing extra space for pop-up events and other times when more floor space is needed. In cases of pop-up dinners, the back room’s ample storage can be hidden behind more curtains, creating a dramatic, linen-draped dining room.
Custom lounge chairs and clothing racks were also created locally, with the chairs receiving a powder coat and hand-caned seats. Four 48-inch light fixtures were made by local basket maker, Alice Noyes, out of river reeds. Driftwood from the James River decorates some shelves and serves as the major component of the window display.
We designed a custom shelf-and-rack system using a series of solid wood pillars that were slotted and notched with regular spacing so the system can be arranged and rearranged depending on the shop’s need. We used a series of different wood species and finishes for the shelves, bookshelves, furniture, checkout counter to play off the brand’s collected look. The founder’s own vintage art and furniture, as well as some pieces we layered in help enhance that vibe.
The walls are decorated with some of the founder’s original artwork, and her father’s woodworking found its way into the glass mulit-tier display table at the shop’s center.
